Coutinho Junior?

Liverpool staff reportedly believe they have a 17-year-old like Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool staff compare 17-year-old Oakley Cannonier to Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool staff feel Oakley Cannonier could be like Philippe Coutinho, according to reports. The 17-year-old has already made a name for himself.

This comes from the Athletic. They ran a piece on Oakley Cannonier and his career so far. It’s been an unusual path for the 17-year-old.

Cannonier actually made a name for himself before turning 16. He did it in a Champions League game, in fact, despite not actually playing.

The teenager was the ballboy who threw the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold before that quickly-taken corner against Barcelona in 2019. It was enough for Cannonier to find some fame as he trended on Twitter and had interview requests.

Now, though, Cannonier is a professional on Liverpool’s books. He signed his first contract in early July, tying him to the club for the next few years.

And he’s starting to make waves on the pitch now. A hat-trick against Chester in pre-season for the Under 18s caught the eye but Liverpool staff apparently love what they’re seeing in training, too.

Liverpool rate Cannonier

The Athletic writes that “his slight frame, low centre of gravity, nifty feet and deadly finish have drawn comparisons to Philippe Coutinho from club staff”.

Liverpool v Burnley: U18 Premier League

That’s a big comparison, given how good Coutinho was at Liverpool. Those staff saw the Brazilian at his brilliant best and not many have matched his ability over the years.

Perhaps Liverpool have yet another diamond in their ranks here, then. There are already the likes of Harvey Elliott, Kaide Gordon and Mateusz Musialowski coming through – will we be adding Cannonier to the list soon?

An injury-plagued 2020/21 did slow the teenager down but pre-season suggests he’s ready to get back on track. And if he does, the youngster may be one to watch.

It’s not often you can say that a 17-year-old has made his mark before even playing a game but it seems Liverpool might get even more out of Cannonier.

A name worth remembering for every Red.

Barcelona Willing To Take £100,000,000 Loss Just For Coutinho

What went wrong for Philippe Coutinho as Barcelona willing to take £100m loss

Former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho could leave Barcelona this summer with Bayern Munich unlikely to turn his loan move into a permanent one with Chelsea among the clubs linked with a transfer.

Philippe Coutinho could leave Barcelona this summer with reports suggesting the La Liga giants could accept as little as £50m for the former Liverpool star.

Coutinho joined Barcelona for a club-record £145m in January 2018 with the Brazilian believed to be one of the highest-paid players at the Nou Camp.

That’s despite the 27-year-old having spent this season on loan at Bayern Munich with the Bundesliga outfit having the option to turn that deal permanent.

It’s believed they are unlikely to do so with inconsistent performances reportedly meaning Bayern are not willing to part with the £105m that the original deal stated would be the price.

Philippe Coutinho has always struggled since his move to Barcelona in 2018

Though, with Munich not expected to pay that, the Athletic claim that Barcelona could accept between £50-70m for Coutinho.

Despite a relatively strong start to his time at the club, Coutinho has contributed 21 goals and 11 assists after 76 games for Barca - numbers that are reportedly deemed not good enough.

He also scored just once in his last 24 La Liga appearances with Barcelona strengthening by bringing Antoine Griezmann to the Nou Camp last summer.

Chelsea are among the clubs linked with a move for Coutinho this summer with the Brazilian having fallen well down the pecking order at Barca.

New Barcelona coach Quique Setien does appear to have hopes that Coutinho can return to form at the club though.

He told RAC 1 on April 15: “I like him a lot and in principle he’s a Barcelona player. They [any interested club] would have to pay his clause or offer a sum, which the club would accept.

“I am counting on him for when next season starts. I don’t know what he wants, maybe I will have to speak with him to ask. He is a great player, no doubt.”

Brazil legend Rivaldo recently said: “Looking at Coutinho’s last few years, we can say that he didn’t achieve what was expecte
d of him, but he still has time to recover his best football and with his confidence back he could easily become the same player he was at Liverpool.

“Furthermore, next year we’ll have Copa America and one year later the World Cup, so it would be important for Coutinho to be playing at a good European club in order not to lose his place in the national team when those big tournaments come around.

“I believe this would be a nice opportunity for him to get back to his best football at Chelsea.”
